Text in the Sand

Every time you walk down the beach, there are always little messages drawn into the sand.  Some are cute such as "I love you" and others are a little bizarre, but it seems like there is always something written in the sand.  Its a way to communicate how people feel about each other, and how they feel about life.

Some messages say how much someone misses a person they care about and they leave beautiful messages along the shore.

While there is not a big similarity between the beach and writing, some of the writing on the beach is really quite beautiful.

Some messages are encouraging.

The best kinds of messages are always those where someone tells you that they love you.

The writing along the beach is usually spontaneous short messages or words that show how people before you were feeling at a particular moment in time.

Huntington Beach State Park

Every year thousands and thousands of tourists make their way down to the beaches of America, but do they really understand the life of the beach? Most people do not know about the dangers of the sea turtle eggs, or the threats that the gulls face of a daily basis. Three summers ago, I worked at the beach I frequent and learned the facts and figures, and how it is possible to save the sea creatures. At Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, they offer classes that you can take in order to learn about the sea turtles, surf life, inlet life, and much much more. You can learn about ancient sea life, as well as the alligators that live in the lake. Every person has the ability to learn about the beach life, and how human life impacts the lives of those sea creatures that live just off shore.

Spring Break

This Spring Break, I was able to finally make it back down to Murrells Inlet after about 6 months of not being able to visit.  I was able to stroll down the beach with my two dogs and not have to worry about stepping over people tanning or being hit in the head with a frisbee.  I was able to lay on the dock and dive in the water.  I felt at home.
My family and I have traditions of playing a card game every night while watching a movie.  It is a good way to wind down a day at the beach.  Additionally, we were able to set up our hammock and take a simple nap listening to the birds instead of hearing drunk teenagers and horns honking constantly.  Finally, we were able to visit my favorite restaurant, River City Cafe, which is walking distance away.  This spring break was exactly the break I needed after a long first half of the semester in the mountains.

What is the Beach Supposed to be?

Every time someone says that they are going to the beach, I instantly think of the serene secluded privacy of my beach house off the coast of South Carolina.  Others, however, think of overcrowded beaches with loud, drunk people with condos and hotels as far as the eye can see. What is the point of going on vacation if you are going to be faced with wall to wall people?

The beach is supposed to be a place where you can lay on a hammock and listen to the wildlife as you sway in the breeze. It is supposed to be a place where you can loose yourself in the beauty instead of in the crowd. You are supposed to sit with your feet in the water and catch crabs off the end of the dock and play with them while they sleep.  The beach is a place to completely relax and become your true self.

Jelly

Eight years ago, my sister and I had two pet jelly fish.  They were really sweet and adorable.  These particular type of jellyfish did not sting or have tentacles so they were perfectly safe. On the day that we caught them, we were swimming in the water and then all of the sudden a huge swarm of them came floating by.  We ran inside to grab the crabbing net and decided that we wanted to catch one. When we got back, we scooped up a couple and put them into a bucket with some water.  At that point my mother came out and told us a story.  When she was little, she and her friend caught some man-o-wars and put them on a raft.  When they threw them back, her friend jumped on the raft and got stung.  My sister and I were scared that when we touched the net that we would be stung, but my mother assured us that these particular type of Jellyfish did not sting.  We had two cannonball Jellies named Jelly and Jolly. We kept them for a few days and then eventually threw them back.  Over all, I would say, don't assume that something is dangerous or safe until you know for sure.

Welcome

This blog will be about my love for the beach.  I grew up spending as much time down near Myrtle Beach as possible.  I have much passion for the beach and I know the importance of keeping things as natural as possible. Additionally, this blog will be about my personal reflection of how the beach should be, as compared to how most people view it today.
